In 1927 Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian bush nurse, created assisted exercise for polio sufferers. With great success in Australia, Sister Kenny travelled to the Unites States where she taught physiotherapists the assisted exercise regime.
It was during this time that Dr Bernard Stauffer, a physiotherapist whose wife was polio striken, saw the concept of assisted exercise and thought there had to be a way to create an assisted exercise system which would alleviate the need for "hands on" therapy. Thus, Dr Stauffer created the first passive exercise machine.
In 1989 Shapemaster UK were fortunate to witness this assisted exercise and, believing it was a phenomenon which the world desperately needed, decided to take the concept back to their offices and work toward providing the world with assisted exercise.
Not stopping there, Shapemaster work with professionals such as NASA, Exercise Physiologists and Clinical Pilates Practitioners in continually developing this technology.
